Artist statement
Each piece reflects my journey of trusting myself. Paintings begin with loose washes of colour, drips and spontaneous marks. These are often bold gestures that carry movement across the surface. From there, I lean into the process, trusting that unexpected moments will emerge through the mixing and layering of paint. These moments of discovery offer openings for new directions. The landscapes that inspire my work both energize and calm me. I’m drawn to shifting light and moving water, impermanence that I hold within the painting.
Bio
Amanda Wondergem is a Canadian artist based in Calgary, Alberta. Her paintings move between expressive landscapes and intuitive abstraction, each informing the other as she translates feeling into form and captures fleeting moments in nature.
Using acrylic and mixed media, she builds layered, textured surfaces that evoke both the seen and the felt. Her mark-making adds rhythm and movement, offering a tactile finish that draws the eye across the surface.
Her graphic design background informs her sense of structure and rhythm, guiding the balance between intuition and intention in her paintings. Her work has gained visibility through local art markets, online shows and group exhibitions, including the Harmony Arts Festival and The Gift of Madness, a touring exhibition across British Columbia that featured the Penticton Art Gallery. She continually refines her skills through workshops and mentorships with artists including Samantha Williams-Chapelsky and Kathleen Conover.
